“Timedrift II”

As a young person, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. The ultimate ascent started round midnight, and we climbed by the darkish, by dawn, and into the early morning. I bear in mind pausing at one level, simply because the solar was rising, and looking on the clouds hundreds of meters under. From that top, they appeared like an ocean, rippled with lavender waves. Timelapse movies like this one, by filmmaker Martin Heck, remind me of that morning and the sense that I had of the sky as an ocean, flowing, crashing, and surging in methods we can’t admire till we decelerate and look nearer.
